The next morning, I padded into the clubhouse kitchen to find Poppy making a huge pot of coffee. âI love you the mostest,â I said.
Poppy grinned. âItâs funny that you say that whenever Iâm making you coffee.â
âDo I?â I asked in a sing-song voice, grabbing a mug.
âItâs gonna be a minute, Auntie.â
I wrinkled my nose. âA minuteâs not really acceptable, Poppy.â
âAnd yet, I still canât snap my fingers and make it go faster.â
I sighed. âRude.â
Poppy chuckled. âI know. They didnât cover that in school.â
I smiled. âWhat are you doing up so early?â
âIâm always up this early,â she said, pulling cream out of the fridge. âI canât seem to sleep in anymore.â
âWhereâs Sparky?â
âHeâs helping Sid with one of the outside lights. I guess motion was caught in that area behind the sign, but the light didnât come on.â
Poppy had started to call Hatch âSid,â short for âStand-in-Dad,â after he officially adopted her, although, she called him âDadâ more nowadays.
If Iâd had coffee, I probably would have done a spit take. âArea behind the sign? I thought that was a blind spot.â
âIt was,â Poppy said. âUntil about two months ago when Sid decided to add cameras.â
I swallowed.
Shit.
âWho monitors the footage?â
âRecruits, mostly. Although, Flea acts as Dadâs second, so heâs the one who stores everything.â
Shit, shit, shit.
âWhy?â Poppy asked.
âNo reason.â I smiled. âIs the coffee ready?â
âAlmost.â

âI take it youâve spoken with Crow,â Duke said as he picked up my call.
âWhat the hell? You didnât feel like giving me a headâs up?â
âWasnât my story to tell. Besides, I didnât know if, or when, Crow would make it official.â
âHe really buying the old Clark ranch?â
âSure is. From what I understand, he paid full asking price. Sounds like heâs all too ready for retired life.â
âIf you consider running around with a bunch of fucking alpacas retirement,â I grumbled.
âItâs good to hear your voice, Minus. Even if you sound like a city boy again.â
I laughed. âOut here, everyone tells me I sound like a hick. Howâs Pearl doing?â
âIâll tell you, that woman is gonna drive me to drinkinâ.â
âBut you already drink,â I replied.
âI know, and tonight Pearlâs drivinâ me to the bar so I can do just that.â I could hear the smile on Dukeâs face.
âYou crack yourself up, donât you, old man?â
âSomeoneâs gotta do it.â
âWell, you tell Pearl Merry Christmas from Cricket and me. Weâre gonna be in Savannah early next year on club business, and weâre gonna try our best to come visit yâall.â
âSheâll be tickled to hear that. We sure do love that little lady of yours.â
âThe feelingâs mutual.â
âSo, how did the Dogs take Crowâs retirement?â he asked.
âAbout how youâd expect. Itâs tough enough losing a President, but when heâs the founder as well...â
I let my words trail off. If anyone had perspective on the matter, it was Duke. Heâd known the founders of both the Saints and the Dogs since the beginning. Both clubs had chapters in Savannah, and although Duke had never been affiliated with either, he rode and did business freely with both.
